Last week, I shared a post celebrating my 20-year anniversary as a financial advisor with LPL Financial. LPL is the company I partner with that provides comprehensive support to myself and my clients. This is an exciting milestone for me for many reasons, and I’m glad to have the opportunity to reflect on my personal and professional growth over the past 20 years.
In doing so, I realized that I’m celebrating yet another anniversary: It’s been just over 20 years since I first moved to Dallas, Texas. I am a homegrown Texas boy, but I haven’t always lived in the big city. In my 20+ years here, however, I’ve learned there’s a lot to love about living in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, which I’d like to share with you today.
The Colorful Dallas Culture
Dallas is one of the biggest “melting pot” metropolises in the great state of Texas. This means our city has a rich culture made up of diverse populations and lifestyles, and there’s never a dull moment in our vibrant city. We’re blessed with a huge variety of art museums, theatres, and concert venues, many of which reside in the iconic Dallas Arts District in the heart of downtown.
We also boast an abundance of good restaurants that feature cuisines from all over the world. We’re especially well-known for our mouthwatering barbecue, authentic Mexican food, and of course, the beloved Tex-Mex hybrid (which consists of large quantities of cheese, beans, meats, peppers, and spices – yum).
And when it comes to holidays and annual festivals, Dallasites – whether native-born or newcomer – know how to party. From our legendary State Fair of Texas (held almost every fall since 1886) to our Cinco de Mayo festivities to our charitably-inclined St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival, we celebrate in style.
But what I love most of all about Dallas culture is the unique mix you get between the big city feel and the country hospitality that’s intrinsic to small towns in Texas. Even though Dallas is hours away from the Texas town I grew up in, I never feel like I’ve abandoned my roots.
My Favorite Dallas Hangouts
With so much to do in Dallas, it’s hard to pick a few favorite hangouts. In fact, my family and I could probably try one new restaurant a week in Dallas and never run out of options. But without a doubt, my favorite restaurants and coffee shops in Dallas are all locally-owned.
If you’re visiting for the first time or are looking for new places to try, I highly recommend checking out Victor’s Wood Grill for a fantastic stuffed chicken breast or smoked pork chop. And if you’re looking for a quieter place to relax, work, or read, George Coffee + Provisions is a spacious local coffee house with a great atmosphere and an even better coffee menu.
Finally, one of my family’s favorite things to do in Dallas is to visit the Fort Worth Stockyards. For those of us who live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the Stockyards are perhaps the biggest reminder that we are truly living in the wild, wild west. From twice-daily longhorn cattle drives to reenacted gunfight shows, the Stockyards are enjoyable for the whole family.
The One Thing I Don’t Love About Living in Dallas
If I had one complaint about living in Dallas, it’s that we don’t live near any mountains or ski slopes. True, not many of us Texans grew up skiing or snowboarding regularly, but for those of us that do love it, the nearest ski slope is a day’s drive away at best. (However, this does provide a nice excuse for my wife and I to plan family vacations in cool, mountainous areas.)
Thriving as a Financial Advisor in Dallas, TX
Just over 20 years ago, I moved to Dallas as a bright-eyed young professional in the financial services industry, and I couldn’t have known then how much I would come to love this great city. From the food to the Arts District, my family and I never run out of things to explore.
I’m also surrounded by a huge network of other great professionals who also share my fondness for Dallas and who have enhanced my experience working, living, and thriving here.
